The maths, stated once
A sportsbook holds its edge whichever way the game goes. It prices a market so that the sum of what it takes exceeds the sum of what it pays, and that is the product rather than a criticism of any operator. Betting can be entertainment you budget for. It cannot be income, a way to recover a loss, or a plan.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
- Depositing more than you decided to, more than once.
- Chasing a loss with a bigger stake, or opening a second account after a limit stopped you.
- Betting money committed to something else: rent, a card balance, somebody else's money.
- Hiding how much or how often, or being irritated when asked.
- Betting to stop feeling something rather than to enjoy a game.
- Live betting through a match you were not going to bet on, repeatedly.
- Borrowing, selling or moving money to keep a balance topped up.
One of these is worth watching. Two or more together is the point to use the tools below rather than to wait and see.
Set the controls before you deposit
Every control is easier to set while the decision is still abstract. The best moment is the day you open the account, before the first deposit.
- Deposit limits. Daily, weekly or monthly, set inside the account. A limit in the cashier is far harder to talk yourself past than a limit in your head.
- Loss limits and session limits. Where an operator offers them, both bind during play rather than before it, which makes them stronger than a deposit limit.
- Reality checks. A recurring prompt showing elapsed time and net position. Set the shortest interval available.
- Cool-off periods. A short lock you cannot reverse early, typically 24 hours to a few weeks. Use it at the first sign rather than the last.
- Self-exclusion. A long or permanent closure. Ask in writing and keep the reply.
- Bank and device blocks. Many US banks can block gambling merchant categories on a card, and blocking software can cover a device. Both work independently of any operator, which is the point.
Self-exclusion at an offshore book: what is different in Wisconsin
This is the honest part, and Wisconsin's position makes it sharper than usual. In a state-licensed online market, self-exclusion is statutory and applies across every licensed operator at once. Wisconsin has no licensed online sportsbook at all yet, so there is no state online self-exclusion register to join, and the offshore operators reaching Wisconsin sit outside any US scheme.
Three consequences worth planning around. Exclusion is per operator, so it has to be requested at every book you hold an account with rather than once. It depends on that operator honouring it, and you have no Wisconsin body to appeal to if it does not. And because of both, a bank-level or device-level block does more work here than it would in a licensed market, since neither relies on the operator.
Wisconsin's tribal casinos operate their own exclusion processes for their properties. If retail betting is the part that has become a problem, ask the property directly.
Free, confidential help
Nationally, the National Problem Gambling Helpline is free, confidential and available around the clock:
- 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738)
- 1-800-522-4700
- Text 800GAM
Both numbers are currently active and both reach the same national network of contact centers. Neither one replaced the other.
In Wisconsin specifically, the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling runs its own free and confidential service:
- 1-800-426-2535, 24 hours
- Text line 1-850-888-4673
- Chat at wi-problemgamblers.org
Calls are answered by trained staff, not by anybody selling anything, and you do not need a diagnosis or a crisis to make one. Gamblers Anonymous runs free peer meetings across Wisconsin, in person and online, and Gam-Anon runs the equivalent for family members, which is often the more useful call to make first.
Age
Every operator covered on this site requires you to be 21 or over. Wisconsin's tribal casino floors and sportsbooks are reported at the same age. Attempting to open an account below it means a closed account and a forfeited balance at the verification stage, and nothing on this site is written for anyone under 21.
