Beat

I cover one narrow thing: the distance between a gambling law being signed and a market a reader can actually bet on. Those are two different events and they can be a year or more apart. Most coverage reports the first one and then goes quiet, which is how a state ends up full of people who are certain betting is legal and cannot find an app.

The work is stage-by-stage. Which agreements have to be reopened, who signs each one, which federal office reviews it, and where in that queue a state actually sits today. If I can name the stage, I can tell you where the market is. If I cannot name it, I say so, because "coming soon" is not a stage.

How I got here

I came at this from the process side rather than the sport. My first job out of school was tracking bill status for a trade association, which mostly meant explaining to members that a signature is not an implementation date. Gaming turned out to be the purest version of that problem, because the approvals sit across two sovereigns and neither publishes a timetable.

Living in Madison helps more than it sounds. When the question is what stage something has reached, being close to the building where the paperwork moves is worth more than an industry contact list.

What I will not write

Independence

This site earns commission from some of the operators it covers. I do not see commercial terms before writing and no operator has moved in a ranking because of them. The criteria are published in full, weightings included, in how we rate, so the order can be checked against the reasoning rather than taken on trust. The clearest proof I can offer is on the money page itself: one of the fifteen books there ships with no welcome offer at all, because our source holds no figure for it and I would not borrow one.
